How do I restore my system and save some files?
Q. I need to restore my system, I keep getting a blue screen error. My wife is a photographer and has over 20 gigs of pics on the hard drive. How can I restore the system without deleting the pics?

A. Go to: Start--> Programs--> Accessories--> System Tools--> System Restore--> Choose some date that you think was before your problem started. Don't worry about your pictures being deleted by System Restore - it won't delete them! Check out the "Note" in the Introduction of the article that I provided a link to below...

How do I restore my computer to an earlier time?
Q. How do I restore my computer to an earlier time when the "Restore" feature on my computer is not working. I have tried over a dozen times to restore my computer and I keep getting the error message "computer could not be restored to this date. No changes have been made. Try another date." Try another date the same thing happens. All of my personal files were deleted from my computer and I want to get them back. Have no clue how this happened. Checked the recycle bin and none of them were there. It is as if they simply disappeared off my computer. Please help. Thank you!

How can I restore the default settings on my computer without completely restoring it?
Q. I want to change all the setting and programs on my computer to the factory settings without having to completely restore my computer and erasing everything. Can anyone help?

A. A factory reset should always be a last option. Try going to this article about steps to take before doing that. There is a lot of good things that speed up a slow computer. If that doesn't work, then do the reset. However the only way to do a reset will remove all files. There is no way around this. The factory reset is different for many computers. Make sure to save all important files first. On many Dell's they have an easy way to do a factory reset. To do this, restart computer, then when blue dell logo appears, hold Ctrl and F11. Your type of computer would help to narrow down the options. If you dont have a Dell, either let us know what you have or go to your brands website. Good luck!

A. o_o;; Well. Your screwed, ironically, I had this exact same problem. I tried everything from making replacement OS disks, to trying to load on drivers to the hard-drive (Little did I know Bios only accept drivers in floppy disks :\) I did everything that I can possibly do, and nothing worked. I ended up ordering the 10$ recovery disks from HP :\ When sent through the mail, I booted them up, and everything is fine and dandy now :3

How do you restore a HP Pavilion to factory settings without the software discs?
Q. We're donating my grandfather's 2008 HP Pavilion laptop and want to first wipe it clear of all personal data. Ideally, we'd like to restore it to factory settings. The problem is that we're in LA with the laptop and the software is back in his house in London. We don't have the time to wait for HP to send new software. Could you please let me know if there is a way to restore it to factory settings *without* the cds? Thanks.

A. Truly the best thing to do is wipe the drive clean. Restoring to factory settings does not not remove all activity that has been done on that machine. There should be a recovery drive or partition that you can activate. Just click the start button and type in restore and hit enter. It should ask you what kind of restore you want to do. Just click factory

A. when you turn on your computer press F11 and wait for instructions... but i really thing you need to have a recovery partition or disks to reformat everything. thats what im doing right now with my desktop, i hope it works or else i don't know what im going to do! if you do this make sure to safe your photos videos documents and all important stuff into an external flash drive before you do it. good luck i hope we can both do it and it finally works.

A. The number of restore points windows saves depends on how much disc space has been allocated to saving them. If they only go back one month then your options are: 1. restore to that point 2. use any manual backups you have made (if any) 3. reload windows from scratch

A. Open Control Panel and create a new admin account. Log on to that account and delete the old account, electing to delete the files also. Edit:What do you mean? If you did it right, the old account and all its files are gone, so what is the problem?

A. Compaq have used actual recovery disks as well as F11 and F12 keys in the past for different models for accessing the recovery partition [you give no details on what model of laptop you have, which would help to give more focused advice]. If F11 is what you pressed before and the reset worked and now it doesn't, then it sounds like someone has either formatted the recovery partition or more likely the laptop came with Vista installed and you have since updated to Vista SP1 or SP2 and that is why the recovery will not work. You should get an error message if it is a service pack problem, though. It is also possible If the F keys on your model [you give no info] have a dual function then, depending on how you have the keyboard software… [cont.]

A. You don't restore the passwords in the strict sense of the word. You create new users, and possibly set their passwords to what they were. Then you restore the data to the appropriate folders of the user profile. Creating the new users will create the right folders so you have a place to restore the data. For example, the user "sally" will have a location on disk that is their "My Pictures" folder which is part of their "My Documents" folder, but only once "sally" the user exists. How to do that in Windows XP:
