What stops the mast of a sailboat from getting struck with lightning?
Q. We have a 35 foot sail boat with a 40 foot mast. It is the tallest sailboat in the marina. A couple of weeks ago I spent a few of nights on it during a lightning storm. It is a 1969 (I think), and it has never once been struck by lightning (otherwise all of the stock wires from the old sound system that we just pulled out would have been melted). What stops sail boats with metal mast from getting struck by lightning?
Asked by Kay - Mon Aug 24 12:21:36 2009 - Boats & Boating - 8 Answers - Comments

A. There are lots of theories, but little research in lightning protection for boats. It's hard to get good data on what does and does not keep lightning from hitting sailboat mast. I do know it does happen...someti mes blowing up equipment ...sometimes not. I wish you continued Good Luck!

What stops a landlord from assigning tenants of all their duties in a lease/contract?
Q. What regulates what types of provisions landlord can/cant include in lease agreements? In theory, could they just delegate all their responsibilitie s they normally would incur while transferring tenants. Jobs such as painting, carpet cleaning ETC. So I ask, what stops a landlord from just assigning every single duty? Why can they legally include "professional carpet cleaning" but can't include professional painting? Who is drawing these fine lines allowing landlords to delegate their closing responsibilitie s onto a tenant legally?

When submitting a book to a publisher, what stops the publisher from stealing the book?
Q. When submitting a book to a publisher, what stops the publisher from publishing the book under the name of one of their directors and effectively "stealing" your work? I know there is probably some copyright law, but how is it enforced?
Asked by qafaqw - Sun Feb 15 04:31:21 2009 - Books & Authors - 5 Answers - Comments

A. If you deal with reputable publishers, they do NOT steal work. Their career and the company would be ruined. The court settlement would be worth far more to the original author than it would ever have earned the thief. Your work has copyright protection as soon as it is written down. You do not need to register the copyright until there is a need to do so (normally when getting published, and a reputable publisher does this for you). If your work were to be stolen, you have an allowable period of time to then register the work in order to pursue legal action. As for mailing a copy to yourself (known as a poor man's copyright), that is a MYTH. It does NOT register a copyright. It does NOT give you any legal protection. It does NOT even… [cont.]

A. This is very interesting, and I like the way you question things that people normally wouldn't question. People that have good self control, use a different part of the brain than people with bad self control. Weird eh? For every deciding you make you use your ventromedial prefrontal cortex. But only people with good self control tend to use thier dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Which adds an entirely new question: What makes someone have good self control and bad self control? This strangely enough is controlled by your personality type. I wont go into to much detail on personality types, cause I'd be typing pages and pages. If you'd like to delve further into it, google "Carl Jung." He's quite possibly one of the most… [cont.]

What are the main stops of the chariots during Ratha Yatra in Puri on the way to Gundicha Temple?
Q. I heard one of the first stops is at the royal palace doors for the Queen to see the idols - she does not come to the public. Also, Salabega's cemetery is a stop. What others? The first answer is very generic -- I was interested in knowing the specific stops of the chariot. I have what is about Ratha Yatra, what are the daily rituals, the Savitor system, the collection system for the temple etc.

A. Ratha Jatra, the Festival of Chariots of Lord Jagannatha is celebrated every year at Puri, the temple town in Orissa, on the east coast of India. The presiding deities of the main temple, Sri Mandira, Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, with the celestial wheel Sudarshana are taken out from the temple precincts in an elaborate ritual procession to their respective chariots. The huge, colourfully decorated chariots, are drawn by hundreds and thousands of devotees on the bada danda, the grand avenue to the Gundicha temple, some two miles away to the North. After a stay for seven days, the deities return to their abode in Srimandira The Jatra for the Ritual Journey take two forms one involving the short circumbulation… [cont.]

Q. With stops for food, restroom, and sleep included, how long is the drive from Vancouver to Winnipeg really? Dividing the distance by 125 km per hour, as other have suggested, seems like a really dumb thing to do, as no one is driving for 24 hours straight. Does someone have a more realistic estimate?

How long can you keep a Pokemon from evolving before it stops trying?
Q. I want to hold off on evolving my Larvitar until it reaches lvl 50. But I read somewhere that after awhile your Pokemon stops trying to evolve. Is this true? I know if you have an Everstone they won't evolve, but if you just keep hitting B will it ever stop trying to evolve? Thanks!
Asked by Cody - Mon Mar 22 17:29:22 2010 - Video & Online Games - 6 Answers - Comments

A. It will not stop trying to evolve, but if you do not evolve it by level 100, you will no longer have a chance to evolve it because it can no longer level up. Just don't forget to take the Everstone off at level 50, and you'll be fine.

What stops a horse fron jumping the fence?
Q. Sometimes, when I drive near a house with a horse, I wonder what stops then from jumping the fence. The fences are pretty low, so I'm sure they could make it over if they wanted to. What stops them?
Asked by Karma - Sun Aug 30 18:56:40 2009 - Horses - 7 Answers - Comments

A. Horses are conscious energy conservers. They don't usually run or jump as fast as or as high as they can unless they are really strongly motivated, and if they are in a nice place with good food and water and buddies to keep them company, they are perfectly content not to try to jump the fence. Usually. Sometimes a horse is motivated to jump out of a place it is being kept by fear: something so frightens it or startles it that the horse takes off and jumps the fence to get away. I've known horses to jump fences when frightened by deer, by dogs, and occasionally by another more aggressive horse in the same pasture. At Texas A&M when I was there in the lat 1970's, there was an Appendix-bred yearling gelding that on two occasions jumped… [cont.]

How to build a car that stops on its own?
Q. For science class, we have been assigned to build a car with a battery and a motor that goes 10 feet and then stops. You are not allowed to attach a string to the car that stops it once the string streches out or anything like that, the car has to stop without anything touching it or being attached to it. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do this. Any ideas? Your answers are greatly appreciated!
Asked by sportschick - Thu Jun 3 21:36:12 2010 - Physics - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Get some batteries of similar quality. Measure its power stored using methods from Make sure they are all the same, or you can simply discharge the higher ones to bring it down. This is to make all the batteries same. (lets call this a full battery) Use one to power up the motor and time how long it last. So, if all the batteries have the same power, all should power the motor for equally long. With this timing, use it to calculate the number of revolutions the motor would have made by: revolutions=RPM *timing With your wheel size, and fix distance of 10 feet, you can calculate how many rounds your axle should turn. Now, based on the number of revolutions your motor would turn vs the number of revolutions your axle would have to move, [cont.]

What stops someone from creating a fake insurance document for 6 months?
Q. If police don't have the general ability to check car insurance, what stops someone from signing up for insurance while doing yearly registration, then after the 6 month period ends just photo shopping the date to be good for another 6 months? Basically only having insurance for purposes of getting a valid registration every year than letting it expire until the new year. Is there anything in place that can stop people from doing this?

A. The states in my area require you to file proof with the state DMV. Your insurance company does this for you. If the DMV does not have insurance on file, it could show up on your driving status when the officer runs your information through the computer.
